Locally produced "Radio Superior" begins its 10th season on Wisconsin Public Radio station KUWS 91.3 FM in Superior and 102.9 FM in Ashland, this Friday.
It will feature two episodes from 1951. The first with the induction of former Superior resident Ernie Nevers into the national college Hall of Fame, the second episode features the firing of General Douglas MacArthur as commander of United Nations forces in the Korean War.
"Radio Superior" began in 1999 with Jack McKenna and Lew Martin along with several actors from local theaters. More than 315 episodes stretching from re-enactments of specific radio show dates from Charles Lindberg's 1927 flight across the Atlantic Ocean through the Great Depression and World War II and now in the Korean War years.
Long-time host Jack McKenna will not be in all of the episodes this season, deciding to go into semi-retirement. The 86 year-old McKenna is being replaced by former WDSM and WEBC broadcaster Tim Michaels. Continuing as the lead newsman, 91 year-old Lew Martin will stay with the series as will 78 year-old former television personality Ray Paulsen.
McKenna began his career in radio in 1946 after returning from England in World War II. He began his television career in 1954, along with Lew Martin and Ray Paulsen signed on the Twin Ports first VHF television station WDSM-TV.
