The Solon Springs softball team fell to 0-2 with a 6-4 loss to the Spooner Rails Thursday evening in Solon Springs.

The Eagles loaded the bases and had the tying run on second base in the last inning but were unable to finish the rally.

"With all of the inexperience we have I was happy with how we competed and played right until the end," Solon Springs coach Dale Rajala said. "We made a couple of running mistakes that cost us two or three runs, so we still have some work to do. But the girls are working hard and I can't ask for any more from them."

The Eagles' roster consists of two seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and six freshmen.

Solon Springs had five hits, including two from Alex Sickler, and one apiece from Chenea Barret, Valerie Garay, Brittany Armstrong and Summer Winkler.

Venessa Zeman suffered the loss, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts.

The Eagles host Luck at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Eagle boys win opener

The Solon Springs baseball team opened its season with a 6-5 10-inning win over Shell Lake Tuesday evening in Solon Springs.

Solon Springs scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game 4-4 and force extra innings.

After two scoreless frames, the Lakers scored a run in the top of the 10th inning before the Eagles won the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Nick Grubbe was the winning pitcher, allowing a run on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts in three innings.

Nick Skaggs and Tyler LaRose pitched the first seven innings for Solon Springs, allowing four runs on eight hits. They also struck out five and walked five.

Caleb Utyro led the Eagles with a double, single, RBI, stolen base and run scored. Grubbe added two hits, two runs and three stolen bases, Cody Utyro singled and knocked in a run, and LaRose had an RBI.

The Eagles and the Northwood Evergreens will play in the Metrodome at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The game may be heard locally on WNXR 107.3 FM.

Northwood girls blanked

Sophomore pitcher Nikki Logergren allowed four hits and struck out 19 Tuesday as Duluth Denfeld opened with a 5-0, eight-inning victory at Northwood in Minong.

The Evergreens fell to 0-2 with an 11-0 loss at Grantsburg (2-0) Thursday.

Northwood hosts Frederic today and is at Spooner on Monday.

Tiger girls win

The Northwestern softball team improved to 2-0 with a 9-1 win over Mellen Thursday evening in Brule.

The Tigers had 12 hits, including three apiece from Taylor Prior and Tiana Arseneau, who tripled, doubled, singled and knocked in two runs.

Kelcee Janigo added two hits and an RBI, Katie Teige had a hit and RBI, Shelby Schultz, Liz Urbaniak and Betsy Hendrick had a hit each and Sara Miller had an RBI.

Arseneau and Schultz pitched for the Tigers, allowing two hits with 15 strikeouts and two walks.

The Tigers are at Duluth Denfeld at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Spartan soccer

The Superior High School girls soccer team lost 10-0 Thursday evening at Ashland. The SHS JV also lost 10-0.

The Saprtans host Barron at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
