Two men in a pickup drove away from a North End business with up to $5,000 worth of stolen copper wire last week. The men are also being sought in connection with the attempted theft of $10,000 worth of stainless steel from another North End location, according to a Superior police report.
The copper theft took place Tuesday at the CLM lime manufacturing plant on Hill Avenue. An employee noticed a truck pull behind one of the buildings. When he went behind the building to investigate, the employee saw two men push a half-full spool of copper wire into the back of their truck and speed off. The vehicle was a maroon Dodge Dakota with Minnesota plates. Both suspects were white. The estimated cost of the wire was $3,000-5,000.
According to the report, a Dodge Dakota was seen leaving the area of a second theft on N. Fifth Street the following day. In that incident, the report stated, two white males attempted to steal an estimated $10,000 worth of stainless steel. A check of the license plate number showed the truck had been stolen out of Duluth, the report stated.
