Tyler Plunkett got a chance to play a regular shift for the Superior High School boys hockey team, and the sophomore didn't squander his opportunity.

Plunkett dished out three assists, including one to his brother, senior Vance, to help the Spartans open the WIAA playoffs with an 8-0 victory over the Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks Friday night at Wessman Arena.

Vance Plunkett also had an assist for Superior, which will next host New Richmond at 7 p.m. Tuesday night. The Tigers defeated Webster 6-1 Friday night.

Seniors Andrew Mattson and Wade Berkseth added two goals apiece. Nate Miner, John LeDoux and Chris Bishop rounded out the scoring with a goal each.

For Tyler Plunkett, the assists were his first three points of his varsity career. Vance, a defenseman, now has three goals and five assists.

"It's awesome," Vance Plunkett said. "It's been a family dream since we've been growing up and it's finally happening that we're getting to play together."

After Berkseth scored Superior's first goal with an assist from Mike Plummer, the fourth line of LeDoux, Miner and Tyler Plunkett teamed up on the next two goals for a 3-0 lead. LeDoux and Miner each scored with Tyler Plunkett assisting on both goals.

"I've been waiting for my chance to play all year and I finally got it," said Tyler Plunkett, who was skating in place of an injured Kellen McCoshen. "I just told myself I had to come out and play. It was just nice to get a shot to do something.

"The three assists were nice, I kind of wanted a goal, but the three assists are just as good."

Mattson's goals came back-to-back midway through the second period.

"I really wanted the natural hat trick, but it just didn't happen," Mattson said. "This was a nice way to start the playoffs, but we have a lot of work left in front of us and we have to come ready to play again Tuesday."

Mattson had a couple of shifts to get the third straight goal, but Vance Plunkett was the one to make it 6-0 on a power play with 27 seconds left in the second period. Tyler Plunkett and Bishop assisted.

"We were on the power play and Tyler gave me the pass at the blueline," Vance Plunkett said. "When I took the shot Johnny (LeDoux) was screening the guy.

"The goal felt good, but it felt really good to get it from by brother."

Berkseth's second goal of the game came after Dan Kolenda's big check knocked the puck loose from a B-W player.

"That's the kind of style of hockey we need to play the next couple of games," SHS coach Jason Kalin said. "We just have to stick with what we do well. We did that the past couple of game and we did that at times tonight. We got away from that a little bit so we have to do a better job on Tuesday."

Bishop finished the scoring when his wrist shot went into the top right corner with 9:29 remaining. Pat Dalbec and Vance Plunkett assisted on Bishop's sixth goal.

Kyle Johnson recorded his fifth shutout of the season for Superior with 16 saves. B-W's Bo Nelson finished with 41 saves.

"The last five minutes of the game were the best for us," Kalin said. "It's obvious that our job is only going to get harder on Tuesday. We're going to have to come ready to play in terms of physical style of play because New Richmond or Webster is going to try to come out and be physical."
