PGA: Madison native Kelly hits hole-in-one at Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) -- Madison native Jerry Kelly had a hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth Saturday during the third round of the Verizon Heritage.

Kelly was two shots behind leader Ernie Els when he stepped to the tee of the 200-yard hole. His 4-iron shot hit the green, bounced to the flagstick and dropped to give Kelly a share of the lead.

Kelly shot a 67 and took a one-stroke lead over Els (71) and Kevin Na (66).

Els, Kelly's playing partner, gave him a high-five and Kelly raised both arms in celebration.

At the green, Kelly pulled the ball out of the cup while the crowd cheered. He cocked his arm as if to throw the ball into the gallery, then stopped and shook his head no while smiling broadly.

Kelly had the Verizon Heritage's 12th hole-in-one. It was the first during tournament play at Harbour Town Golf Links since Blaine McCallister and Jeff Sluman did it in 1996.

Kelly said he's had ''four or five'' aces in competition so he knows how to get past the excitement and emotion that comes with every golfer's dream. ''If it was for a boat or the car, it might have been a different story,'' Kelly joked. ''But I was more disappointed I didn't get anything for it.''

Call that bad timing. Had Kelly aced the par-3 seventh, he would've received a 23-foot, center-console fishing boat worth $50,952.

Instead, Kelly will have to be satisfied with the momentum swing he gained from the shot. He went on to make birdie on four of his next eight holes to lead the field by three shots.

Els said Kelly's tee shot look good the whole way. The ''most beautiful shot you've ever seen,'' Els said. ''But still, us pros, we hit quite a few of those good looking shots, but they don't really go in. This one went in the hole.''
