Panel OKs UWS building projects

MADISON -- A new student center and a library renovation, two of the biggest building projects ever slated for the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus, received final state approval this week.

MADISON -- A new student center and a library renovation, two of the biggest building projects ever slated for the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus, received final state approval this week.

The State Building Commission Wednesday added $2.7 million to Rothwell Student Center project to include a 125-stall parking lot and entrance plaza, bringing the project's total budget to $24.76 million.

The commission also approved a $1.5 million increase to the Jim Dan Hill Library renovations, increasing that budget to $7.8 million. More funding was needed to reinforce the floors, add an elevator and finish the basement as an user area.

In a prepared statement, State Sen. Bob Jauch, D-Poplar, said the additional funding for the projects comes from private donations and not from taxpayer supported borrowing.

"The UW-Superior Foundation is one of the most active and generous in all the UW System, and their drive to raise private donations for the proposed UW-Superior Academic Building has been a model for other campuses seeking approval of capital projects," he said.

The commission's action this week follows UW Regent approval last week on the additional funding requests. Work on both projects is scheduled to begin next spring.
