Starting this week, Wisconsin schools have a three-week window in which students can apply to switch districts.

Wisconsin has had open enrollment since 1999. The option has led to active recruiting, and parent's increasing awareness of it has led to more participation. In just over a decade, state Department of Public Instruction spokesman Patrick Gasper said interest in the program has grown from 6,000 applications when the program first started to nearly 30,000 applications last year.

The open enrollment period ends February 19. Parents can request their child go to any public school district - with approval from the involved districts.

State aid goes along with the student. Currently it amounts to $6,400 for each child enrolled.
