Gloria Leighton has retired from teaching in the Maple School District after 39 years. She touched and influenced the lives of thousands of students during that time.

I, her husband, Lance Boyle, aka, Don, am planning a surprise retirement soiree with the help of Pat and Lori Flynn, Tom and Kris Hansen, and Denny and Deb Battuello.

The party begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at Vintage Italian Pizza, 1201 Tower Ave.

I am using the Telegram as a means of getting out the word so I don't forget to invite someone. If you know Gloria and would like to wish her well, please show up at VIP by 5:45 p.m. to hide in the large banquet room at the rear of the building and wait for us to come walking in the door to a mighty "SURPRISE!!"

I am sure she will hate me for this, but I believe I have attorney friends who will represent me. The problem is they all like Gloria more than me.

We will have a social 45 minutes - because of our age, an hour is way too long - from 6 to 6:45 p.m. From 6:45 to 7:30, pasta with red and white sauce, along with pizza, salad, pop and ice water will be served. Retirement cake will be the desert. Then at 7:30 p.m., the real fun begins. A cordless microphone will be passed around to those who have a Gloria story. Her former colleagues and students from Northwestern Elementary School should have plenty to share. Her many friends will have lots of stories, and I cannot wait to hear the ones of which I know nothing. A wireless microphone will be used to make sure all will hear.

So, you may ask, "how can this be a surprise if it is in the paper?"

I, in my devious way, will intercept the Telegram and she avoids the computer like the plague.

As long as nobody spills the beans, she will not have a clue. So, I am counting on lots to show for this once in a lifetime gala. Lots of food has been ordered.

Gifts are not necessary, unless you are compelled to give her something after 39 years of teaching, actually 46 years with seven years in Massachusetts, and all the free food etc. - just kidding. A card with a message inside would be wonderful.

I hope you make every effort to stop for at least a little while. It should be lots of fun.

And remember, "silence is golden!"
