Seat belt use is at all time high

Buckle up or pay the price. That's the message 336 law enforcement agencies in Wisconsin are trying to get out as they join the national "Click It or Ticket" safety campaign. The enforcement effort runs through June 3. This year's effort is the largest yet. "The 'Click It or Ticket' message is simple. If you are stopped by an officer and aren't wearing a safety belt, you will get a ticket," said Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent David Collins in a prepared statement. "And with a recent change in state law, drivers also may get a ticket for every unbuckled passenger in their vehicle." A survey in 2006 showed that safety belt use in Wisconsin reached an all-time high of 75 percent, but the state still lags behind the national average of 82 percent. "We estimate that every one-percentage point increase in safety belt use in Wisconsin saves about six lives each year," Collins said.
