A bill requiring the U.S. exit the Iraq war by the end of 2008 is set for a U.S. House vote today.
"The president has asked Congress to provide almost $200 billion in new spending for the war in Iraq. As chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, I've made it quite clear that I do not intend to report that request out of my committee for consideration without a policy change in Iraq," said U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, D-Wis.. He is co-sponsoring the bill with Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Penn.
"Today, we will ask the House, as an alternative to the president's request, to provide the president only $50 billion, as opposed to his $200 billion request. But that money would be conditioned upon the president agreeing to a policy which declares our intent to end our participation in the civil war in Iraq by the end of 2008.
"The president can not continue to expect to have the Congress rubber stamp his actions in this unfortunate war," said the Wausau Democrat.
