Numerous observances scheduled throughout region on Memorial Day

Memorial Day events are planned throughout the region:

  • Douglas County Veterans Memorial Day Council holds a Memorial Day program at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery. Superior Mayor Dave Ross gives the address, and Gary Banker of Concordia Lutheran Church.
  • Pastor Charles Plaster, interim pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, conducts a Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at Riverside Cemetery, west of Tower Avenue on Highway 105. In case of rain, the service moves to the service building.
  • The American Legion Bong-Hofstad Post 409 conducts Memorial Day services Monday at the following cemeteries: 9 a.m. Lakeside; 9:30 a.m. Maple; 10 a.m., Blueberry; 10:30 a.m. Brule; 11 a.m. Highland; 11:30 a.m. Lake Nebagamon; noon in Hawthorne; and 12:30 p.m. Poplar. A member muster starts at 8:30 a.m. at Mother's Kitchen, Poplar.
  • Hawthorne Lions Club hosts a Memorial Day service 11:45 a.m. Monday at Parkview Cemetery in Hawthorne at 11:45 a.m. Monday by the Hawthorne Lions Club. The Rev. Duane Aslyn officiates. Coffee and rolls will be served.
  • The 47th Annual Northland Memorial Day Parade starts at 12:30 p.m. Monday at 59th Avenue West and Grand Avenue in West Duluth with a flyover by the 148th Fighter Wing. The parade moves down Grand Avenue, turning on 46th Avenue West and ends at Public Schools Stadium. At 1:45 p.m., a Memorial Day service with keynote speaker Richard Dumancas, Carlton County deputy veterans service officer, precedes a free concert by Sh-Boom from 2:30-3:30 p.m.
  • The Hanson-Maki American Legion Post 506 and VFW Post No. 10197 of Iron River has scheduled events in eight locations featuring prayer by Wally Skerbeck, chaplain, along with their auxiliaries' honor guard and rifle squad, led by Dale Mitchell. Sites include Everest Cemetery in Waino at 8:30 a.m., Lutheran Cemetery in Oulu at 9 a.m., Hillcrest Cemetery in Oulu at 9:30 a.m., Pine Glade Cemetery in Oulu at 10 a.m., Tripp Cemetery in Tripp at 10:45 a.m., St. Michael's Cemetery in Iron River at 11:30 a.m., City Cemetery in Iron River at noon and St. Florian's Cemetery in Ino at 12:30 p.m. A luncheon will be held at the Good Fellowship of St. Florian's Church, Ino.
  • The Duluth Transit Authority suspends services on Memorial Day.
