In its first conference game of the year, the Northwood High School baseball team defeated Luck 9-7 Tuesday evening at home.

"We beat who we think is one of the best teams in the conference," assistant coach Paul Vaara said. "It was a grueling back and forth game, and we came out on top."

The Evergreens' Derek Denninger pitched seven innings for the win with six strikeouts and five walks.

Northwood also got some great hitting in the game. Gus Morely went 3-for-3 with a triple, and fellow senior Mike Malone went 2-for-4. Junior T.J. Asp also had a big game for the Evergreens. He was 1-for-2, but his hit was a pivotal 2-RBI double in the third inning.

With the win over Luck, one of the teams considered a preseason favorite to win the conference title, Northwood is now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Lakeland-West Conference.
