Northwestern improves to 4-0 with win at Chetek

The Northwestern High School boys basketball team remains undefeated following its 64-53 victory at Chetek Friday night. The Tigers are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the Heart O' North Conference, while Chetek is 1-3 overall and 1-2.

The Tigers got off to a good start in the first quarter, led by solid shooting from senior Kelsey Moreland. Moreland made 12 of the Tigers' 18 first-quarter points. It took the entire Chetek team combined to match Moreland's effort in the quarter, and Northwestern took the early 18-12 lead.

Moreland continued to be hot in the second quarter, scoring nine points, four of them on free throws. Four other Northwestern players also chipped in during the second quarter to give the Tigers a 35-26 lead going into halftime.

"He had just a fantastic first half," NHS coach Dan Cowley said of Moreland.

In the second half Moreland cooled down, but William Koepp and Saul Falter stepped up. Koepp and Falter combined to score 18 points over the last two quarter, holding off a slight rally by Chetek in the third quarter. Steven Tecker, who had six points in the first half, also contributed to the Tigers' cause with a pair of baskets in the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Cowley said the Tigers had only one turnover, as the Tigers won 64-53.

Cowley said the game see-sawed back and forth, with Chetek challenging the Tigers' lead many times.

"I was really pleased with how our kids were able to weather those runs," Cowley said.

The Tigers scored more points than Chetek in every quarter except for the third. Northwestern also surpassed Chetek on the free throw line, making 12-of-21 shots while Chetek made 3-of-7.

Four Northwestern players finished the game in double figures, while Chetek had three players in double figures. Moreland was the leading scorer of the game with 25 points, Koepp scored 12, and Tecker and Falter each added 10 points for the Tigers.

Adam Ganske led Chetek with 16 points.

Cowley three other Northwestern players were also crucial in the team's win. Aaron Corry and Lee Brown came off the bench to provide some important relief minutes for the starting players, Cowley said. Corry also scored four points in the game.

Senior Devin Doskey also played a very solid for the Tigers, starting for Deo Tecker who was out with a sprained toe. Cowley said Doskey did a good job rebounding and played his role well.

Northwestern is at Ironwood at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
