The Northwestern High School girls basketball team received good news Tuesday night, in more ways than one.

First, the Tigers defeated Cumberland 59-21 on what was Parents' Night for the NHS girls. Then the Tigers learned they were back in a tie for first place in the Heart O' North Conference after Barron defeated Hayward, 35-32. "It's a three-way tie at 10-2," said an excited NHS coach Shawn Leith.

Northwestern holds the best overall record at 16-2 while Hayward is 13-3 and Barron is 13-5. The Tigers will play their final two conference games of the season on the road, taking on Ladysmith Thursday and Bloomer on Feb. 22.

In Tuesday's game, the Tigers began with a 20-point first quarter while holding Cumberland to just two points. Nikki Hughes hit two 3-pointers in the quarter and scored 10 points.

The Tigers pushed their lead to 25 points by halftime, and Cumberland was never able to recover.

"I was real happy with the guard and post play again," Leith said. "Nichole Hughes really came out strong in the first half. She played very well for us."

Hughes ended the game with 16 points to lead all scorers. Gretchen Grube battled a bigger Cumberland player in the post and added 13 points for NHS. Leith said it was good to see Grube play a physical game and not back down.

"Each game she keeps getting better," Leith said of Grube.

Neither Grube nor Hughes played in the fourth quarter, and every Tiger player got in the scoring column.

"The girls stepped up the defense again tonight," Leith said. "It was just a very good overall game offensively and defensively."
