Cans of Del Monte canned fiesta corn seasoned with red and green peppers are being recalled due to potential botulism concerns. Del Monte issued the recall Dec. 11 due to under-processing of the product, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Because the product did not complete the sterilzation process, there is a potential for a certain type of bacteria which creates toxins which can cause a botulism -- a life-threatening foodborne illness.
No reports of illness have been associated with the product to date, according to the United State Food and Drug Administration.
The recall affects 64,242 cases of corn. Products subject to the recall are 15.25 oz. cans with the following scanner barcode: 24000 02770, and the following “Best if Used By” dates:
