Have you or your family had a relationship with the Namekagon or St. Croix rivers? Do you have stories to tell? Then come to a Memory Day hosted by the National Park Service at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
Namekagon River Memory Day at the Namekagon River Visitor Center in Trego from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Namekagon River Visitor Center is located in Trego on Highway 63, one mile east of U.S. Highway 53. For more information, call (715) 635-8346.
Join county historical societies, the Cable Natural History Museum, and the National Park Service in recalling times gone by. A logging exhibit from the Sawyer County Historical Society, a boating exhibit from the Washburn Historical Society, and the river section of the Smithsonian's "Between Fences" exhibit will be on display. Take part in learning some history of the area and educating others with your memories and knowledge. Come share stories that can be recorded or jotted down, bring in photographs that you are willing to have scanned or copied. Help keep the memories alive and history from being lost by having your memories recorded.
With permission, the stories and photos will be used by the Riverway to better tell the history of these rivers through programs, exhibits, brochures, and the Riverway's Web site. Stories can help today's visitors understand what a special place the Riverway was and still is.
The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, a unit of the National Park System, was established by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act in 1968; it is one of a group of eight rivers in the country which first received this recognition. Protection of natural and cultural resources is part of the Riverway's mission.
