Warm temperatures and a sizeable crowd greeted runners for a duel in the sun on the streets of Superior. The sixth UW-Superior Alumni Association Fourth of July 5K race had a record number of participants (more than 200) and an exceptionally fast field of runners, as 16 runners posted averages of under six minutes per mile.

The race started with Joe McGaver of Duluth setting a blistering first-mile pace that only Dane Moreland of Lake Nebagamon, Wis. and two-time former 5K winner Jason Aho of South Range, Wis. were able to match. Moreland and Aho closed the gap shortly after the first mile and then passed McGaver and ran stride for stride until the last quarter mile.

Moreland then gained a 15 second gap on Aho for the win. Sean Gaskell of Esko, Minn. was the third overall male finisher.

The women's race saw 14-year-old Kylie Nordness of Menominee Falls, Wis. lead from start to finish. Local runners Amy Israel and Susan Maras, both from Duluth, rounded out the top three overall.
