A Minnesota man was killed in a Friday snowmobile accident in Bayfield County.
The snowmobile operator, Gerald Lee Thomsen, 42, of Randolph, Minn., was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a release from Chief Deputy Dan Clark of the Bayfield County Sheriff's Office.
At about 9 p.m. Friday, the sheriff's office received a 911 cell call reporting a snowmobile accident. The caller reported a member of his group had been in an accident and was seriously injured.
Members of the Washburn Ambulance service, Bayfield County Sheriff's Office and the Wisconsin DNR responded. They found the injured snowmobiler on Trail 19 about a mile east of County Highway C and a mile north of North Boundary Road in the town of Bell. Thomsen was pronounced dead at the scene.
It appeared the snowmobile left the trail on a corner and the operator struck a tree. The Wisconsin DNR is preparing an accident report. The incident remains under investigation by the DNR.
