Mary Margaret Allen

Mary Margaret Allen, 84, former resident of Superior and Solon Springs, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen, Texas following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary Margaret Allen, 84, former resident of Superior and Solon Springs, died Monday, Dec. 11, 2006, at Alfredo Gonzales Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen, Texas following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.

Mary was born in Superior on March 29, 1922, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Wagner) Lenihan.

She grew up in Superior and graduated from Superior Cathedral High School. Mary attended college and received a registered nurse degree in Gary, Ind. She worked as a registered nurse, nursing supervisor and taught nursing students at the former St. Joseph and St. Mary's hospitals of Superior until her retirement in 1974.

Mary married Clayton W. Allen on July 3, 1946, at St. Patrick's Church in Superior. They spent many years living in Billings Park and also had a cabin in Solon Springs. In 1979, they moved to Pharr, Texas but summered at the cabin and in Superior until Clayton's death in 1995.

Mary became very involved in volunteer work while living in Texas. She was active in the Pharr South mobile park activities, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and especially enjoyed volunteering in the gift shop at Rio Grande Hospital.

Mary is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Joan Meys, Gerald (Jennifer) Meys, Catherine (Thomas) Dorin and David (Elise) Meys, all of Superior. She is further survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a very special goddaughter, Kathy Anderson-Olson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clayton; four brothers, Joseph, Paul, Raymond and John Lenihan; and one sister, Ruthmarie Meys.

The family would like to thank Mary Jo Allen for all of her help and support during Mary's illness and afterward.

At Mary's request, a private graveside service will be held in Superior with Downs-LeSage Funeral Home assisting the family with arrangements.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to Cathedral School or St. Mary's or St. Luke's hospice units.
