What the floods taketh away in June has finally been restored.

Marina Drive between the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center and Barker's Island reopened this week, for the first time in the nearly six months since flood water swept the culverts from under the road, causing it to collapse.

Marina Drive, which reopened Tuesday, was expected to open today, according to Public Works Director Jeff Goetzman.

RJS Construction finished the work to restore the road this week and reopened the drive Tuesday, restoring a second route from Barker's Island to Highways 2 and 53.

The project was delayed because of permitting required to change the size of the culvert that moors the road.

The goal of enlarging the pipe under the road is to alleviate the amount of water that flooded the Central Park neighborhood and ensure better flow for storm water to prevent the kind of damage that took out the road when more than seven inches of rain fell June 20.
