On July 30, 2008, Lorraine (Wiinamaki) Tyykila, 83, died peacefully in her Arlington, Va. residence.
She was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Superior and raised in Maple. She was the beloved wife of the late John P. Tyykila. She was a caring and compassionate mother and friend. She touched the lives of family and all she met with her love and faith in God.
She graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in Duluth in 1946 and retired from nursing at Arlington Hospital in northern Virginia. She was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, volunteered with Meals on Wheels and enjoyed gardening and traveling.
She was the devoted mother of Sandra A. DiBacco and her deceased husband Paul A. DiBacco; the Rev. Susan L. Tyykila; Tom P. Tyykila and his wife Judy L. Garland Tyykila, Shirley A. Van Riper and her husband Tim Van Riper. She also loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren Lori DiBacco; John DiBacco and his wife Erin DiBacco and their children Michael and Ryan, John Van Riper and Sarah Van Piper.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon M. Tyykila; her son David Tyykila; her husband John P. Tyykila, and her brother Ray Mannelin.

She is survived by two sisters, Sigrid Levanpa and Phyllis Dall, her brother, Bob Mannelin and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Superior. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Maple. Memorial contributions may be made to St Luke's Hospice at 220 N. Sixth Ave. E. Duluth, MN 55805.
