SUPERIOR — Enrollment is growing at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

For the second consecutive year, the college reported an increase in total enrollment in 2022, based on data taken the 10th day of classes, according to a news release. UWS reported a total headcount of 2,682 this fall, a 4% increase over 2021 numbers. Enrollment has increased 6% over the past two years, the news release said.

“We continue to see growth through our online graduate programs and high school dual enrollment, but also continue to support on-campus undergraduate programs with the support they need to thrive,” said Jeremy Nere, executive director of admissions.

The 2022 data includes a 31% increase in online graduate enrollment at UWS, with particular growth in mental health and school counseling programs. International enrollment also remained strong with more than 70 new international students from 20 countries arriving at the Superior campus — one of the largest international classes in recent history.

The college did see a slight 4% decline in on-campus undergraduate students, but overall has held constant for the past few years.

Wisconsin Public Radio reported that only three state universities enrolled more students in 2022 than in 2021. The University of Wisconsin-Madison saw a 5% increase, UWS increased by 100 students for 4% growth and enrollment at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay increased by 3%.

Nine of the state’s 13 universities saw enrollment fall, WPR reported, and one campus reported steady enrollment. Overall enrollment at Wisconsin’s state universities fell by around 1%.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
