LAKE NEBAGAMON — Volunteers are being sought to help remove invasive cattails from a section of the Brule River beginning at 10 a.m. July 9. The group will meet at wildcat landing, located on private property at 7639 Highway 27 in Lake Nebagamon, and head out on the water.
“The cattails come out pretty easily, but you'll want to be prepared for the elements, ready to get muddy and have some fun,” said Zach Stewart, natural resources specialist and aquatic invasive species coordinator for Douglas County. “We will break for lunch on a beautiful island in Big Lake, so don't forget to pack a good sandwich.”
To register, email your name, contact information and the number of people in your group to zach.stewart@douglascountywi.org . Volunteers should contact Stewart if they have any questions prior to the event or if they would like help finding a canoe or tools to borrow.
The following equipment is needed:
- Shovel or folding/pruning saws
- Chest waders or sturdy shoes to wade in (waders recommended - it's muddy)
- Long sleeves and work gloves
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, bugspray
- Water, snacks, bag lunch
- Raincoat and change of clothes
- Canoe/kayak with paddle and lifejacket
- Anything else you need to be comfortable working on a remote area of river for the day
