2022 Memorial Day events in Douglas County

Here's a rundown of events happening across the county.

The Douglas County Veterans Service Office is seeking volunteers to help place flags at Greenwood Cemetery beginning at 9 a.m. Email Veterans@DouglasCountyWI.org or call 715-395-1477 for more information.

Superior

The second annual Memorial Weekend Community Picnic and Military Vehicle Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center. A free picnic lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities will include face painting, children’s activities, lawn games, a helicopter, humane society animals and more. Free and open to the community.

Gordon

The Depot and Whalen House museums will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a flea market taking place on the Depot lawn.

A historic walking tour of downtown Gordon takes place from 2-4 p.m. Meet at the Depot. Donations accepted.

Wine tasting and music will take place on the deck of the Depot from 2-7 p.m.

May 29

Gordon

The Depot and Whalen House museums will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The historic Meffert House at 14298 S. Finstad Dr. will hold an open house from noon to 2 p.m.

May 30

Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435, Superior

The American Legion Post 435 and The Retired Enlisted Association Chapter 119 will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery. The Harbor Masters singers will perform at 10:15 a.m., followed by the ceremony. It will include an Honor Guard presentation and presentation of wreaths by local organizations. Golf carts will be available for those with limited mobility.

A short flag raising ceremony will take place at noon at the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center.

Bong-Hofstedt Post 409, Poplar

The Bong-Hofstedt Post 409 will hold services at eight area cemeteries, rain or shine. Due to the schedule and distances between cemeteries, post members will arrive, conduct the ceremony and depart immediately.

Ceremonies will be held at Lakeside Cemetery at 9 a.m.; Maple Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.; Blueberry Cemetery at 10 a.m.; Brule Cemetery at 10:30 a.m.; Highland Cemetery at 11 a.m.; Lake Nebagamon Cemetery at 11:30 a.m.; Hawthorne Cemetery at noon and Poplar Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.

Lockman Jensen Post 499, Gordon

The Lockman Jensen Post 499 will hold a Memorial Day service at the Wascott Cemetery at 8:30 a.m. and the Gordon Cemetery at 9 a.m. A cemetery tour will take place following the legion services. Meet at the Rough House (white shed)
