On May 10, I had the privilege of participating on a panel to review several presentations by seniors at Superior High School. As a requirement for graduation, each senior must complete a senior project and present it to a panel of community representatives. Students are expected to work independently on an approved project, which entails a minimum of 20 hours.

Through this process, students are expected to make a connection with a community member for assistance on the topic they have selected, gain a clear understanding of the project, be able to articulate their understanding, analyze their learning and integrate that learning into school and their personal life.

Listening to these future leaders, I was informed, entertained and impressed. Recognition should be extended to the students who laboriously worked to make such successful presentations. Their poise and grace in honing their public speaking skills is a testimony to the hours of investigating and researching their topic of choice.

Supporting teachers, who serve as mentors to these students, are to be commended. The additional time they spent with that student has provided them with extra confidence to be successful. Mike Matejka and Kim Towns deserve special recognition for the coordination of this "Graduation by Exhibition" process.

As the school year is coming to a close, thank you to the committed teachers who have made this a successful year for all students, including the '07 graduating class.
