If the Feb. 19 primary allows us a write-in candidate, I will vote for Sen. Russ Feingold, and I encourage you to do the same. He, of course, will not have a chance of becoming the Democratic nominee, but it will make a statement and send a message to the convention and maybe, if he earns enough for a delegate or two, give him a voice in the selection and planks of the party.
The economy seems to be the issue that will loom as we near the fall election, but the misguided war is the question that needs to be answered. All the candidates -- Republican, Democrat and Independents -- should know that the economy does not trump the war, but that the war did trump the economy. Because of that, it will hang over us for a long time to come.
Most of us accepted the war against al-Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan as the right thing to do and believe that it is unfortunate the administration turned its attention to Iraq. There were a few who questioned this move, and were skeptical of the claims made by the president and questioned the motives behind their actions. One such person was Sen. Russ Feingold.
The path to correcting this situation, as it is now, begins with going back to the point at which the Senate vote, authorizing Iraq War, was taken. This should be done at the Democratic Convention by giving Wisconsin's favorite son, Russ Feingold, a thanks for his brave vote. At the same time, an apology should be extended to our soldiers and their families for sending them to the wrong place. Moreover, we should say we are sorry to the Iraqis for their loss of life and the mess we have made of their country.
This is not to dishonor our American soldiers and their sacrifices, for they have given more than they should have! The super patriots need to understand this, for in the healing, it is necessary to acknowledge the mistake.
Join me in voting Russ Feingold for president.
