Thank you! Thanks to the Telegram for publishing it, to Mike Savage for writing last Saturday's Book (store) Review and to Jan Murphy and the Beecroft staff for the excellent bookstore these past 10 years. It was a eulogy well written and so well deserved.
It is hard to believe that the store is closing in less than two months. In the early days, I wondered if a small independent book store could survive financially in a small city with chain operations nearby and the Internet and other competition that could shave costs. In the last few years, I decided that excellent personal service was being rewarded or the Murphys were making additional charitable contributions to the city.
Hopefully someone or an organization will pick up the reins. I sincerely hope so for Joyce and me and the Superior community. Joyce believes independence is such an important criteria for a local bookstore that if someone doesn't pick up the reins, we will have to cross the border and find one.
