Lakers complete undefeated Upper 13 League season

The Superior Lakers amateur baseball team completed a perfect 14-0 Upper 13 League season this weekend by beating the Ashland Merchants 14-1 Friday evening and then shutting out the Duluth Padres 5-0 Sunday afternoon.

Ryan Myhre threw a four-hit shutout in the Lakers' win over the Padres at Bulldog Park on the Minnesota Duluth campus.

In his first start of the season for the Lakers, Myhre retired the first 13 batters he faced before Keith Gunderson lined a single to center field with one out in the fifth inning. Myhre had 10 strikeouts walked two batters and hit two others.

Kyle Peterson and Chris Musser had two hits each and Orry Engebretsen singled and stole three bases to add on to his team-leading 19 stolen bases in just 14 games for Superior.

The Lakers also got doubles from Jake Tokar and Taylor Olson and singles from Brian Burman and Joe Copas.

Superior went ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Peterson and Joe Copas. The Lakers scored two more runs in the seventh on a passed ball and a double steal. Musser added an RBI single in the eighth to put the score at 5-0.

Losing pitcher Anthony Bush (2-7, 2.87 ERA) allowed two earned runs in seven innings. He allowed six hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

Bob Eastman had two hits for Duluth, which finishes the Upper 13 League with a 5-9 record and falls to 12-17 overall. The Padres have two non-league games remaining. They travel to Cloquet's Ed Mettner Memorial Field on Wednesday to play the Duluth Xpress at 6 p.m., and will host the Hibbing Miners at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Bulldog Park.

Against the Merchants at Morrie Arnovich Field, Josh Foreman was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in five scoreless innings. Musser worked the last two innings for the Lakers allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out three.

The Lakers, 15-1 overall, pounded out eight hits with Mussed collecting two of them. Peterson was also 1-for-1 with three RBIs and Orry Engebretsen, Cory Wilander, Olson, Tokar and Myhre had a hit apiece.

Superior, which is sponsored by Aces on 29th, Superior Beverages and the Hallett Dock Company, is idle until the Wisconsin Baseball Association Playoffs. The first round will be announced Tuesday and will be played at four sites Aug. 12-14. The WBA State Tournament will be at Coon Valley Aug. 19-21.
