Lakers clinch Upper 13 League title

The Superior Lakers defeated the Oulu Blue Jays 4-1 on Sunday and the Twin Ports North Stars 5-2 Monday to stay undefeated in the Upper 13 League at 12-0 and secure first place for the season.

The Superior Lakers defeated the Oulu Blue Jays 4-1 on Sunday and the Twin Ports North Stars 5-2 Monday to stay undefeated in the Upper 13 League at 12-0 and secure first place for the season.

Josh Foreman was the winning pitcher Sunday at Morrie Arnovich Field, allowing one run and two hits while walking two and striking out nine in seven innings. Cory Wilander picked up the save allowing no runs on a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.

The Lakers were led offensively by Kyle Peterson, who had two hits and two RBIs, and Taylor Olson, Orry Engebretsen and Wilander, who had two hits apiece.

Adam Zwak got the win on Monday against Twin Ports at Ted Whereatt Field. Zwak pitched seven innings allowing one run on five hits, five walks and nine strikeouts. Ryan Myhre came in for the two-inning save, allowing an unearned run and one hit while striking out four.

Olson led the Lakers offensively with two hits and two RBIs. Brian Burman had a two-run single, Peterson hit an RBI single and Orry Engebretsen and Corey Verhel had a hit apiece.


Jeff Adams suffered the complete-game loss for the North Stars, allowing six hits with 11 strikeouts, five walks and two hit batters.

Offensively for Twin Ports, Shaun Marshall was 3-for-3 and Sean Cummings had two hits and an RBI.

The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Peterson's two-out RBI single scored Engebretsen, who led off the game with a hit.

It went to 2-0 in the fifth inning when Engebretsen walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Olson's single.

The Lakers added two more runs in the seventh when Engebretsen singled, Cory Wilander walked and both scored on Burman's single down the right-field line.

The North Stars' first run came in the bottom of the seventh when Rich Hailey walked and later scored on Cummings' single.

The Lakers took a 5-1 lead in the ninth when Wilander walked, stole second and scored on Olson's hit to left field.

Twin Ports' final run came in the ninth inning when Cal Fougner singled and scored after an error and two walks.


The Lakers (13-1) have qualified for the Wisconsin Baseball Association playoffs for the sixth time in eight seasons. It's also the third time they have won the Upper 13 League. The Lakers have also placed second three times.

The Lakers are one of two teams in the state of Wisconsin still undefeated in league play.

The Lakers are back in action at 7 p.m. Friday when they host the Ashland Merchants at Morrie Arnovich Field and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Duluth Padres at Bulldog Park on the Minnesota Duluth campus.

The North Stars play at Exeland at 1 p.m. Saturday then host Ashland C&S Design for a doubleheader at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Oulu 5, Padres 1

The Oulu Blue Jays scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull away for a victory over the Duluth Padres in an Upper 13 League amatuer baseball game last Wednesday evening at Bulldog Park.

Winning pitcher Ben Grams allowed one run in eight innings on six hits and five walks. He had six strikeouts.


Luke Olin, Brad Dufek, and Andrew Urbaniak had two hits each for Oulu.

Losing pitcher Anthony Bush allowed two runs (one earned) in six-and-one-third innings. He had two strikeouts and walked one batter.

Duluth's Bob Eastman had two hits, and broke the club's single-season hit record of 24 set by Dan Solarz in 2008. Eastman, who is batting .310, now has 26 hits in 25 games played in 2011.
