A very important date is fast approaching, that being the primary election on Sept. 9. For the first time in 20 plus years there is no incumbent running, creating a wide open primary for the 73rd Assembly District. In addition, there is no Republican candidate so for all practical purposes, this contest will be decided in the primary election.
I look around me and find more and more that our country lacks good old fashion "common sense" at all levels of government. That is why I am backing Vern Johnson for Assembly. Vern is a down to earth, common sense man that I believe will help to solve many of the problem facing our area and bringing our concerns to Madison to help solve them.
I have been a union member and passionate union activist for 32 years now. I am proud to say that Vern will stand up for the many hard working men and women in Wisconsin. He is a proud member of Firefighters Local 74 and understands the bread and butter issues facing working families today. Common sense things like providing a decent wage to be able to afford a decent home, food on the table, affordable and fair health care and affordable energy costs plus some money left over to afford some of the little extra things in life that a middle class family should be able to expect. These are vital core issues that provide for a good life for your family.
He will also work to keep property taxes down and make sure that the state continues to provide the revenue sharing that our city and county need to help maintain essential core services as well as the extras that provide for the high quality of life that we all enjoy in this beautiful corner of the state. I think you will agree that these extra quality of life things are slowly disappearing.

In addition, being the son of a former educator in Superior, as well as being the father of a new teacher in her third year, I have heard the stories of what has and is happening in our schools. Teachers need to be able to provide students with the best possible education with the best possible materials and technologies as well as be able to maintain proper order in the class. To do this, administrations and school boards need to provide those tools and the support to maintain law and order in schools and classrooms. Teachers again need to be the "authority" in the classroom. Vern will work hard to achieve this goal.
In closing, I want to say that I have known Vern for quite sometime now as a fellow city employee and union member. His honesty and integrity are beyond question. He is a likable guy that only after a few minutes talking with him, you will feel comfortable just being yourself with him. He is hard working and most important of all, he is a fine family man. So ask yourself, isn't that the type of man you want to work for you in Madison?
Read more about him at vote4vern.com. Then, if you think so, join me on Sept. 9 and vote for common sense -- vote for Vern Johnson.
