Two Northwestern High School juniors are putting their best foot forward to fight hunger.
Paige Orlowski and Mike Lindsay, members of DECA - an association of marketing students - hold a Hearts for Hunger Run on Saturday in Iron River. The event includes a 10K, 5K and 2 mile walk/run; proceeds benefit Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank.
“Northwestern DECA has worked with Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank for many years now,” Orlowski said. “We chose to support Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank because we wanted to continue supporting them in their mission to feed Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin’s hungry.”
Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank rescues and distributes about five million pounds of food annually, the equivalent of four million meals for the hungry. It serves northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin, including Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland and Iron counties. For every $1 donated, Second Harvest rescues and distributes enough food for five meals to a Northland family in need. The DECA members hope to raise $1,000 for the food bank.

“Organizing the run has been a very interesting process for Mike and I,” Orlowski said. “We had to work with many community members and businesses for the idea of the run to become more than a thought.”
The students have chipped time out of their summer vacation to coordinate the run/walk.
“We have definitely received a lot of support, which has helped us to become closer to completing the run,” Orlowski said. She encouraged everyone to come out for the event.
“This is a fun way to support the local food shelves,” she said. “There is something everybody in the family can do, including the 2 mile walk/run, 5k and 10k. It will be a fun-filled morning supporting a great organization.
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. at the Iron River Community Center, with the walk/run starting at 8 a.m. and finishing at the community center. The $25 entry fee includes a free T-shirt.
People who can’t make the event, but want to donate, can mail a check made out to Northwestern High School to Attn: DECA 5K, Northwestern High School, P.O. Box 218, Maple, WI 54847. More information is available on the Hearts for Hunger Run Facebook page.
