An Illinois man who was a passenger in a car that lost control and hit a tree on a Sawyer County highway Sunday night has died from his injuries.

A deputy on patrol discovered the 1995 Dodge Intrepid about 7 p.m. along County Road K in the Town of Bass Lake. The car had apparently been eastbound at high speed when the driver lost control and the car collided backwards into a tree at the intersection of Trails End Resort Rd.

Two men in the car were taken by helicopter to Duluth hospitals. A third occupant was taken to Hayward Area Memorial Hospital and later taken by helicopter to a Minneapolis hospital.

The Sawyer County Sheriff's Department reported this morning that one of the men has since died from his injuries. The names of the men, all Illinois residents in their early 20s, have not been released.

Authorities believe speed and alcohol contributed to the accident, which remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department.
