As the gun deer hunting season approaches this weekend, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding people that shooting may take place in many state parks.
Republican lawmakers demanded more state parks and natural areas be open for hunting, and after a lot of controversy, some changes were made to the plan. Additional state parks will be open for hunting during the gun deer season.
Scott Loomans, wildlife management specialist with the DNR, says hunters need to take a close look at restrictions before going on the public land.
"It's very important that a hunter who wants to go there goes to the DNR website and looks up that park, because there will be a map of each park showing where hunting is and where it is not allowed. Many of the campground areas and some of the high-use areas will still be closed to hunting," Loomans said. "Of course, hunting pressure is heaviest on the opening weekend, but our hunters -- and everyone else -- they have a good history of getting along in those spaces, and so I think things will go smoothly."
Other DNR officials recommend hikers and other silent sport enthusiasts wear brightly colored clothing if they do head for any state parks where hunting is allowed.
