The River Alliance of Wisconsin is developing a print and Web-based guide for northern coastal rivers.
"Northern Water Trails to the Big Lakes" was made possible through a grant from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program.
With a goal of helping coastal communities put a positive spotlight on their hometown rivers, the guide highlights 10 Great Lakes tributaries in Ashland, Iron, Bayfield, Douglas, Marinette and Oconto counties. Rivers selected for the guide were picked for ecological, recreational, cultural and tourism values.
"This won't be a paddling guide, but rather a valuable resource that gives an up-close look at the many attributes of rivers in these beautiful coastal areas," said Gail Pierce, a northern rivers advocate for the River Alliance.
The guide includes information for tourists and local residents so communities near the rivers may realize economic development by promoting sustainable use of local rivers.

For each river featured, the guide includes a map with visitor information; the river's history, interesting facts and ecology; an explanation of any special protective designations the river has; and information about the area and guest services.
