Northern Wisconsin’s newly elected congressman was sworn into office May 19 in Washington D.C.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Minocqua, joined newly elected U.S. Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif., in taking the oath of office Tuesday during a pro forma session of the U.S. House of Representatives. Both were voted into office during May 12 elections in their respective states.

“Tom spent a lot of his life being a successful small businessman,” said U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Brookfield. “He was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2008 and two years later was elected to the first of two terms in the Wisconsin Senate. He has been a very strong and vocal proponent of the people of … Wisconsin, and he will continue to do so on the national stage.”

Tiffany resigned his seat in the Wisconsin Senate on May 18.

“My message is simple,” Tiffany said. “Ten years ago, I was given the great privilege to represent the people of northern Wisconsin in the state Legislature in Madison. I made one commitment to them, and that was to advance the cause of freedom and liberty. Today I make that same commitment to the people of northern and western Wisconsin, to fight for the same enduring ideals that form the American republic.”

Tiffany will finish the term of former Rep. Sean Duffy, who resigned to spend more time with his family. He has already announced he will run for reelection in November. His opponent in the May 12 election, Democrat Tricia Zunker, announced she plans to run again, as well.
