Now is the time to clean out the basement, clean up the yard and clear out the garage in Superior before winter hits again.

The city is providing a free option for items that are no longer usable — two free days at the landfill in October.

The free landfill days run 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 19 and Oct. 26

City officials encourage people to donate usable items but offer the option for disposal when items are no longer usable.

Items that can be dropped off free include household trash, brush, up to four tires 18 inches or smaller, and grass clippings and leaves.

Mattresses and box springs can still be dropped off, but regular fees will apply — $17 for dry and relatively clean mattresses, and $20 for wet or heavily soiled ones.

Proof of residency is required either with an ID with a city address or a property tax statement with an ID.

The free landfill days are not open to contractors or businesses. All loads must by covered to avoid littering during transport, and all loose items must be tied or bagged.

Items that are not accepted at the landfill include recyclables, demolition and construction materials, electronics, appliances, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, motor oil and household hazardous materials. Visit ci.superior.wi.us or call 715-398-7222 for disposal options.
