The Superior City Council confirmed the hire Tuesday, Aug. 20, of one of its top posts in the Finance Department.
Ashley Puetz, a certified public accountant with six years of professional experience, was appointed to serve as the city’s assistant finance director.
Puetz graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2014 with a degree in accounting and a minor in financial planning. She started her career in 2013 with an internship in private accounting and has worked the last five years in public accounting, most recently as a tax supervisor.
She starts with the city Thursday, Aug. 29.
The top financial post is currently being filled by an acting director, the city’s contracts analyst, Jane Michel, as the search continues the search for a permanent replacement after Finance Director Jean Vito retired.
The city’s Human Resources Committee approved changes to the finance director’s job description to draw more qualified candidates after the city failed to get qualified candidates in the first round of hiring.
The change no longer requires the finance director to be a certified public accountant but gives the city the option to require one of three certifications — public accountant, government financial manager or public finance officer — to be obtained within a specific period of time as a condition of employment. The latter two are specific to government accounting.
“We’re not saying you have to have it to apply,” said Cammi Koneczny, human resources director. “We’re not saying you have to have it to be hired, but if we determine that we want them to obtain it after they’re hired, we would be telling them that in their offer letter.”
If a candidate has one or more of the certifications already, Koneczny said they would become a preferred candidate.
Koneczny said the position has already been advertised with the changes in the certification requirements. The city has gotten several more applications than it did after the first effort to fill the position. No one was interviewed after the first round of applications, Koneczny said.
