"We had three players on the varsity who had never played Bristol Ridge before and the lack of familiarity with the course seemed to be some concern," SHS coach Ed Willie said. "The boys would hit a good shot only to find that it ran through the fairway or found a hazard or bunker that was blind to them from the tee.

"Hayward's top four golfers played very solid and beat us pretty soundly. We usually match up well with them so I think this shows that we haven't quite hit our stride with consistency."

Seeing their first varsity action was Rochon.

"Scott held up well with an 88, and Rob Mihalek played a great round of golf to card a 74," Willie said. "To finish second in a field of more than 100 golfers, is a pretty impressive performance."

The Spartans are back in action Friday and Saturday at Grand Rapids' Grand Slam meet.
