The Superior High School freshmen football team improved to 2-3 with a 30-26 win over the Duluth Central Trojans Thursday evening at Duluth Central.

Ben Lindberg started the scoring for Superior, racing 43 yards for the score on the Spartans' first offensive play. Superior widened its lead to 14-6 in the second quarter when Cole Schorr scored on a 12-yard rush and carried the ball for the conversion.

In the third quarter, Eric VanPuymbrouck scored on a 7-yard rush and the conversion for a 22-12 lead.

Duluth Central then scored the next two touchdowns and took a 26-22 lead in the fourth quarter, but VanPuymbrouck once again scored a touchdown from 4 yards out and scored the conversion to give the Spartans the win.

The Spartans had a balanced offensive attack with Lindberg and VanPuymbrouck each rushing for 74 yards and Schorr adding 71.

Cody Kitch led the Spartan defensive effort with eight tackles and a key fumble recovery in the fourth quarter. Jared Bryant added seven tackles, Erik Olson recovered a fumble and Lindberg intercepted a pass.

The Spartan freshmen play their final game at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday against Duluth East at Ordean Field.
