FOOTBALL: Superior Stampede face Threshers this weekend

The Superior Stampede (2-0) begin their quest for the 2007 Mid-America Football League Championship on Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. kick-off against the Iowa Threshers (1-1) of West Des Moines, Iowa at Ole Haugsrud Field in Superior.

The Superior Stampede (2-0) begin their quest for the 2007 Mid-America Football League Championship on Saturday with a 4:05 p.m. kick-off against the Iowa Threshers (1-1) of West Des Moines, Iowa at Ole Haugsrud Field in Superior.

The Threshers are led by former University of South Dakota quarterback Demareo Darrah, as well as former Iowa State tight end/wide receiver Micah Wagner.

The Stampede, meanwhile, are led by running back Kevin Guillory, 2006 MFL Player of the Year. Guillory is already a two-time minor league national player of the week for his first two performances.

The Stampede are averaging 28 points per game and are only giving up an average of 6.5 points per game. Linebacker Tim Manns (20 tackles and three sacks), and defensive tackle Kevin Szczyrbak (3.5 sacks) led the defense in the Stampede's 36-6 victory over the Northern Wisconsin Thunderhawks.

Notes: Former NFL quarterback Bruce Mathison is scheduled to do the coin toss prior to the game. Mathison, who played in the NFL for the Buffalo Bills, San Diego Chargers and Seattle Seahawks, graduated from Superior Senior High School in 1977.
