Flags fly in recognition of Cross' sacrifice

Flags are flying at half-staff at all city and county buildings in honor of Cpl. Kenneth Cross, a Parkland native who was killed by a roadside bomb Sunday while serving in the U.S. Army in Baghdad.

The flags were lowered Monday under the direction of Mayor Dave Ross and Douglas County Board Chairman Doug Finn after they learned a second area serviceman was killed in Iraq.

In February, Marine Lance Cpl. Adam Van Alstine was killed by a roadside bomb while serving in Ramadi, in wesagedy for our local area, and so soon after Adam Van Alstine," Ross said Monday night after talking to Cross' family.

Ross said there is no way to express appreciation for the sacrifice Cross made for freedom.

"He voluntarily committed his life to his country," Ross said. "He put on that uniform and said he would go wherever he was sent."

On learning of the death of Kenneth Cross, Finn said, "we regret the loss of Kenneth and express our deepest sympathy to his family."

Flags will remain at half staff until the day after Cross' funeral.

Arrangements are pending.
