DULUTH -- Lightning struck a Duluth church early Thursday morning, July 12, and that is believed to have caused about $75,000 in fire and water damage.
The Duluth Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at Christ Lutheran Church where crews found heavy fire around a cross cupola structure on the roof of the church, authorities said.
According to the fire department, the fire extended into the roof area but was very quickly contained and stopped. Initial damage estimates were $50,000 for the structure and $25,000 for contents as there is water and smoke damage to the interior of the church.
The Duluth Fire Marshal's Office investigation as to the origin and cause of the fire resulted in the belief that a lightning strike to the church started the fire, according to authorities.
