Arson was the cause of an early morning fire that damaged the Capri Bar at 1224 Tower Ave. Sunday. Fire Investigator David Johnson with the Superior Fire Department said someone started a fire in the vacant upper level of the building.

The fire caused an estimated $5,000 damage, according to a release from Battalion Chief Howard Huber. No injuries were reported.

The bar was open for business as usual Sunday, according to co-owner Karen Geegan.

“We’re open for business at 10 a.m. every day,” she said, as the fire did not affect the bar area on the main floor.

Fire department crews responded to the structure fire at 3:44 a.m. Sunday. Visible smoke and flames were reported on the bar's second floor, Huber stated. Arriving units attacked and quickly extinguished the fire.

“It had the potential to be an extremely disastrous fire,” Johnson said, because it was right downtown in the middle of a block of buildings. “We’re just fortunate we got a good call.”

He estimated the fire hadn’t been burning long before it was reported.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the fire department, 715-394-0227, or 911.
