Volunteer fire departments kick off their annual "Be Somebody" recruitment campaign 3-6 p.m. today in downtown Brule.
Most people take fire and ambulance response in their communities for granted. In Douglas County's rural areas, volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians provide first response service when 911 is dialed. These volunteers are custodians, deputies, office workers, foresters, social workers, salesmen, housewives, students, farmers, mechanics, doctors, lawyers, truck drivers, teachers and more.
They share a commitment to helping neighbors and a desire to be involved in the community. These volunteers enjoy their department camaraderie and continue to learn new skills.
As more families move into rural communities, additional volunteers are needed to meet the need for increased service. Along with trained firefighters, rescuers and EMTs, volunteers are needed to assist with the day-to-day operations of a department such as office duties, building and vehicle maintenance, food preparation and other duties.
During the "Be Somebody" event, personnel and apparatus from more than 30 fire departments will be on site. Following the kickoff, most departments will set up with a fire rig in a visible spot in their local area to talk with potential volunteers.
