Fire destroyed a home along Sunny Shores Drive in Gordon Monday night.

No one was in the structure at the time of the fire, which was completely consumed, according to a Douglas County Sheriff's Department report. Two cats may have perished in the blaze.

Firefighters from Gordon, Wascott, Highland and Barnes responded to the 8:21 p.m. fire call. When Deputy James Madden arrived on the scene, the single-story house was completely consumed by fire.

"Parts of the south and west exterior walls were the only part of the house still standing, though barely," Madden wrote in his report.

The home's owner, Paul Keller, had gone next door for dinner.

"He told me at one point he had seen a 'flash' outside and that it was odd as the weather wasn't right for lightning," Madden wrote.

Keller said he had trouble with his gas hot water heater which would not ignite. Someone from the Polar Gas company had been out that day to repair it. Keller had also been using his wood stove that day, but said he had closed it up before going next door for dinner.

Dep. Brad Hoyt, the department fire inspector, was called in, but his report was not included. No cause was given for the blaze.
