Fire damages Allouez taconite loading facility

A structure fire at the BNSF taconite loading facility in Superior's Allouez neighborhood damaged a metal building and more than 100 feet of conveyor belt this morning, but no injuries were reported.

A structure fire at the BNSF taconite loading facility in Superior’s Allouez neighborhood damaged a metal building and more than 100 feet of conveyor belt this morning, but no injuries were reported.

The Superior Fire Department responded to the fire at the loading facility, located at 3701 E. Itasca St., at 5:18 a.m. Upon arrival, crews were met with flames and smoke showing from a 40-foot metal building and approximately 150 feet of conveyor belt leading to the building, according to a release from the fire department. BNSF Safety immediately reported to emergency responders that all personnel were accounted for and safe. Fire crews were able to prevent further spread and extinguished the fire within 90 minutes. Firefighters remained on scene until 11:56 a.m., conducting overhaul operations and extinguishing remaining hot areas. Eleven firefighters and one battalion chief responded to the scene. No injuries were reported. Fire investigators remain on scene and a cause has yet to be determined.
