Business is good at Barker's Island Marina and the city of Superior is reaping the benefit.

Revenue received from the marina for the last boating season exceeded expectation, according to a report given to the city council Tuesday night by Jack Culley, CEO of Sailboats Inc., which manages the city-owned marina.

Councilors who negotiated a new lease agreement with the company more than two years ago had projected the contract would net the city about $370,000 in revenue this year. However, Sailboats Inc. paid the city more than $422,000. The indoor storage facility alone created about $20,000 in surplus income.

Now city officials are hoping to turn that revenue generated into a source to make needed dock repairs at the marina. Some of the docks at the marina are sagging below water level.

"I hope to use revenue from the lease so we don't have to go to the taxpayers to support the marina, Council President Ed Anderson said.

During a finance committee meeting prior to the full council session and Culley's presentation, Anderson said he would like to see marina users -- through the city's lease payments -- maintain the facility. He said he would like to see all the money go back into the marina, but that would mean filling a hole in the city's budget.

Who would have ever thought the marina would earn $400,000 for the city, said Mayor Dave Ross. He said he's grateful for former mayors Charles Deneweth and Bruce Hagen for their vision for the island.

The finance committee is considering a plan that would establish Barker's Island Marina fund to set aside money from the lease payments to designate for repairs at the marina.

Finance Director Jean Vito recommended using the difference between expected revenue and actually earnings to establish the fund. The finance committee held the issue in committee to review options for setting aside money to maintain the marina.
