The Northwood Evergreens boys basketball team won its first game of the season Monday night with a 55-50 victory at Drummond.
Northwood jumped out to an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and led 36-21 at the half. The Lumberjacks got back into the game by outscoring Northwood 17-5 in the third quarter. But the 'Greens held on and outscored the 'Jacks 14-12 in the fourth quarter.
"We had a good start, but they made some changes at the half and it took us a while to adjust," Northwood coach Paul Vaara said. "But the kids did respond and got back on track in the fourth quarter."
Another key in the fourth quarter was Northwood's 12-of-15 shooting from the free-throw line.
"That basically won the game for us," Vaara said.

Derek Denninger led the Evergreens with 16 points. Reese Stariha added 13 points and Zach Haynes had 11.
Cole Dechant had 13 points and Nathan Rondeau and Kyle Boswell had 12 each for Drummond.
The Evergreens are at Clayton at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
EVERGREEN EXTRAS: Both teams are now 1-4 on the season. ... Overall, Northwood was 13-of-17 from the free-throw line.
