Events highlight special month at local museums

Superior Public Museums offers free admission May 19 to tour the SS Meteor and the Old Firehouse and Police Museum as the museums reopen for summer.

Guided tours aboard the last whaleback run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour departing at 4 p.m. The firehouse is open for self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Volunteers from the Superior fire and police departments host a chili feed at the old firehouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors can enjoy a bowl of chili for just a "Buck-A-Bowl." Superior Police Department patrol car, motorcycle, a fire rig and fire boat will be on display. There will also be a police dog demonstration.

On board the Meteor, Tony Dierkins presents a slide show of historic postcards of the Twin Ports at 2 p.m. A book signing and opportunity to visit with Dierkins follows. At 3 p.m., enjoy "Whalebacks and Wrecks of Western Lake Superior" presented by Yan Saillard, owner of Innerspace Scuba in Duluth.

Sunday, May 20, Fairlawn Mansion joins with Glensheen to offer package tours in honor of National Preservation Month. Tours at both mansions start at 10 a.m. and people can tour both for one rate. The last tour begins at 3 p.m., allowing time to visit both sites. Call Fairlawn at 394-5712 or Glensheen at (218) 726-8980 for more information about this event.
