Eugene J. "Gene" Renko, 89, longtime Superior area resident, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Golden Living Center, Superior, surrounded by his family.

Eugene J. "Gene" Renko, 89, longtime Superior area resident, died Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Golden Living Center, Superior, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio Dec. 28, 1917, the son of John and Hilma (Qvick) Renko.

Gene married Betty A. Eder Jan. 9, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio and recently celebrated 61 years of marriage.

During World War II he sailed as a Merchant Marine.

He was employed by Cleveland Cliffs as a chief engineer on the Great Lakes for 43 years, retiring in 1982.

Gene was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Superior, Twin Ports Harbor Club and the Superior Elks Lodge 403.

He loved working with electronics and amateur radio.

He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed golf and was a wonderfully, good natured man.

He is survived by his wife Betty, Superior; one daughter, Mary Jane Grajeda, Wichita, Kan.; one son, Eugene D. Renko, Superior; two granddaughters, Katie Barker and Nichole (Rylee) Smith, both of Wichita; and one great-granddaughter, Maddee Smith, Wichita.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hilma Renko.

Visitation begins at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and continue until the 2:30 p.m. memorial Mass with the Rev. James Tobolski officiating.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Superior.

The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 East Fifth St., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
